If you are considering teaching your baby or child healthy new sleep habits, so that they can independently fall asleep and connect from one sleep cycle to the next throughout the night, and without your intervention or engagement, then it’s likely you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed or confused by the different sleep training "methods" available to you, or even what they mean, in terms of marketing their approaches. 

Allow me to unpack the language for you with a few important facts that will help you to enter into this process with your best foot forward. That way, you may better set your expectations and discern whether or not your child, and the rest of the family, is ready to move forward into the process of change as well.

First, all methods -- every single one ever invented -- involve tears (CIO). Yes, all of them. The only thing that varies between all of the sleep-training approaches out there is how much the parent wants to be a part of the crying process, not that there is no crying involved. That’s where certain sleep training methods are marketed as "gentle sleep" approaches, or even, "no cry" sleep methods. It’s not that there’s no crying involved -- far from it! In fact, with many kiddos there are often more cumulative or intense tears with some of the more integrative approaches than parents are prepared for, simply because there is more active interruption to the child's learning process from parents as they try to help them learn how to get from one sleep cycle to the next on their own.

Furthermore, there is no way to change up a child’s routines, and basically take them out of their familiar comfort zones, without them at least telling mom and dad, temporarily, that they think their new sleep rules suck. Change, even good change, is always accompanied by a couple of days of temporary struggle as we get used to being outside of our predictable routines. But, once we, or rather our babies, have had a few days of a consistent new routine under our belts, they tend to relax again and find comfort with the new changes as they become more familiar with them each day.

It’s important to keep in mind that this is a normal and healthy kind of stress or struggle, as babies and children experience changes like this all of the time. A child learning how to master a new gross motor development skill, like walking or going to daycare or preschool for the first time, is not any different.

Secondly, it’s helpful to realize that all methods are safe and effective when properly performed and matched to your unique child and family! We tend to demonize certain methods as being ineffective, or causing over-the-top crying, when the truth of the matter is that 99% of the time, said method wasn’t being performed correctly in the first place.

Here are the two main reasons why many behavioral sleep training methods fail:

1. The child was not set up for success with The 4 pillars of sleep hygiene ™ (i.e. environment, ability to detect true sleep cues, effective pre-sleep routines, timing of sleep, etc.). This is my trademarked foundation to all sleep shaping and training. Without this important and natural sleep science foundation, no sleep training method will work. And if it does, it will be very short-lived when real-life circumstances come your way -- such as travel and illness.

2. Parents or caregivers were unwilling, or unable (due to their own anxiety or sleep deprivation) to provide the necessary consistency, patience, and commitment children need from their securely attached caregivers to support them through the important changes being made to their sleep health, habits, and safety.

In conclusion, I'll summarize all of this by likening it to breastfeeding. If the latch doesn’t go well right out of the gate (if breastfeeding is being performed incorrectly), then it’s going to be a miserable, tear-filled experience for both mom and baby, right? But that doesn’t mean we should demonize breastfeeding. It’s just that it was not performed properly. Applying this same logic to sleep training methods helps parents better understand why consistency, attention to detail, and patience with their chosen method, is absolutely essential!

Also, it’s equally important to properly match the right sleep-training method to accommodate the child’s age, temperament, and possible past-failed sleep training attempts in their background, as well as a parent’s realistic ability to be consistent with the performance of the chosen method.

The Fourth of July is a holiday known for lights, sounds and sun. This makes Independence Day exciting, but also an especially risky day for babies and toddlers. Protect Their Ears

While one of the best parts of celebrating the Fourth of July is the cookouts and the food, we need to mind the curious children around us. Teach your children to not go near the grill when it’s on because it gets hot and smoky. Also, examine your grill before you use it to make sure there are no cracks, holes or leaks.

 

Practice Water Safety

The Fourth of July can be one of the hottest days of the year. Baby pools are, therefore, fun and smart things to include in kids’ Fourth of July parties. They may cool down your babies and toddlers, but don’t forget that children can drown in even an inch of water. Keep an eye on your child at all time, or opt for a sprinkler which is a safer option and still keeps them playing in the water.

 

Never Forget Sunscreen

Since the Fourth of July occurs during a day when the sun’s rays are strongest, and you may likely be celebrating at an outdoor cookout, don’t forget to protect your baby from a dangerous sunburn. Apply a non-toxic sunscreen on your child, such as Babyganics sunscreen, and reapply regularly throughout the day.

 

Avoid “At-Home” Pyrotechnics

While it’s best to avoid bottle rockets and sparklers all together, sometimes you will be at events where you cannot control what others do. If these sorts of activities are happening near you and your baby, head inside and enjoy the festivities there.

Have (Safe) Fun in the Sun

Summer’s here, so it’s time to head outside.

But wait, you don’t want to over-expose your kiddos to the sun! Does this mean you have to stay inside all season and miss the heat?

Not necessarily. If you pick activities that allow you to protect your kids from the sun’s rays and teach them how to enjoy the sun in a smart way, then you can still fully embrace this summer fun .

To help you out, we share five sun-safe activities to enjoy this summer.

 

Enjoy a “Smart” Beach Day

Going to the beach seems like the opposite of a safe sun activity, but if you do it right, it can be a great learning tool for your child. Plus, who wants to avoid the beach all summer long?! Clothe your children in protective attire, apply non-toxic sunscreen (such as this one from Badger Balm) when needed, give them a hat to shield them from the sun and explain how each of these things will keep them safe during a beach day.

 

Have Fun With Safe Gardening

Gardening can be a great activity in the summer because it keeps kids active and teaches them about ecosystems. To make this activity safe, adorn them in sun-protective clothing and equip them with the proper personal protective equipment for gardening. Gloves and long sleeve shirts are great examples of things to dress your little one in for safe gardening in the sun. Come prepared with some facts about plants and all of the animals that benefit from them.

 

Take a Nighttime Stroll

While you want to remind your children that they can get sunburnt at any time of day, the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. To avoid this primetime exposure and still get your kids outside, suggest a walk after dinner. Your children will get some outdoor exercise and avoid the sunniest part of the day. Plus, the cooled down temperature will be more comfortable for the kids, and you won’t have to worry as much about them overheating.

 

Explore and Learn at the Zoo

There are a number of animals who have the natural ability to protect themselves from the sun. For instance, elephants, gorillas and koalas all keep themselves safe from the sun’s rays. Plan a zoo day (dressing your child appropriately and applying sunscreen), and teach your child about these animals. It will be a fun way to explain sun safety and since it involves animals, your child may better retain the knowledge.

 

Picnic in a Pavillion

Grab a basket and a blanket and a handful of healthy snacks and head out for a picnic...in a pavillion! Picnics are great family fun, and it’s always nice to enjoy some sunshine while having a meal. Find a park with a pavillion so you can set up your spread there to avoid the sun’s direct rays.

The first few months of a baby’s life are filled with wonder, excitement . . . and exhaustion.

We know how tiring it is to do the late-night feedings, followed by the middle-of-the-night diaper changes, and finished with the early morning wake-up calls that now consist of cries. And every day is a repeat of the day before.

We promise that one day, you’ll look back on these days and miss them more than you can handle.

But until then, we’ve got some sleep tips for new parents to make those sleepless days and nights a little easier!

 

Take Shifts.

It takes a village, right? If you’re in a position to use teamwork to your advantage, do it! Create a sleep schedule. It could be one night on, one night off or you could split the night in half. Figure out what works best for the two of you, and take on this adventure as a team.

 

When Baby Sleeps, So Do You.

Don’t underestimate the importance of catching some extra Z’s whenever the opportunity presents itself. Your nights may be difficult, but the days won’t feel as bad when you and baby share nap times.

 

If Someone Offers Help, TAKE IT.

Now is not the time to be shy or to feel like you have something to prove. If friends or family offer to watch your new baby for a little while, say YES. You need all the rest you can get, whenever you can get it. If you’re especially tired, don’t be afraid to ask for help, either. Your friends and family know this is an exhausting time for you. They want to help.

 

Go to Bed as Early as Possible.

Most newborns are up every few hours, so it’s a good idea to go to bed as early as you can. Even if you’re not sleeping, you’re still relaxing. Your body is still taking a break, which is important to your health.

 

Snack on Superfoods.

You are going to be sleep-deprived for the first few months, there is no way around that. But one thing you can do is feed your body foods that keep your energy high. Some of these foods include brown rice, honey, bananas, apples, oranges, and spinach. Ask your doctor for more suggestions.

Overtired Versus Undertired Babies: What’s the Difference?

As a parent, you may think that there is nothing worse than your child being so tired they will not sleep. Just because your child is resisting going to sleep does not necessarily mean they’re “overtired.” A fussy baby could also be “undertired.”

It may come as a surprise, but overtired and undertired babies are actually very hard to differentiate. While they can display these poor sleep patterns similarly, it’s important to know which one your baby really is so you can properly remedy the issue. To help you better understand, we break down the similarities and differences of overtired vs. undertired.

 

Overtired vs. Undertired Similarities

Obviously, both of these issues revolve around sleep, and both overtiredness and undertiredness can have lasting effects on your child. The younger the child, the more sensitive their circadian rhythm. If this rhythm is even slightly put off balance, their growth and learning can suffer.

As both overtiredness and undertiredness throw off a sleep schedule, they often display similarly. Both an overtired baby and an undertired baby will cry, a lot, even when they’re not hungry. Also, whether your child is undertired or overtired, they will wake very early in the morning and rarely go back to sleep. This not only shortens what would be a healthy amount of sleep, it also negatively impacts their, and your, entire schedule for the day. Right before bedtime and naptime is when overtired and undertired babies demonstrate another similarity. Both overtired and undertired babies will resist settling before bedtime, so if you don’t pay attention to how they are resisting, you may not know if they need more or less sleep.

 

Overtired vs. Undertired Differences

Unfortunately, when trying to avoid a child not sleeping enough (overtired), it is easy to overcompensate, creating an undertired baby. To avoid babies getting overtired, many parents put their children to bed TOO early. So these sleep issues, while different, affect each other.

As we stated, both overtired and undertired babies resist settling before bedtime. Luckily for you, how they resist is different, so that may help you determine which they are. An overtired child will be extremely energized right before bed. An undertired child, however, will resist by crying and fighting.

Behaviors during naptime are also where overtired and undertired babies begin to show key differences. When a child is overtired, they will take extremely long naps, and it’s very difficult to wake them up from these daytime slumbers. When a child is undertired, however, they will be very restless during naptime, and they will wake up frequently.

Lastly, other than waking early in the morning, undertired children don’t typically show many symptoms during the daytime. When a child is overtired, they express daytime irritability as well as lack of concentration during the day.

5 Tips to Unplug Your Kids
It’s the Digital Age, which means a lot of life happens behind the screens. We receive information faster than ever and we can easily communicate with loved ones around the world, but too much of anything is never a good thing—including technology. When we live life for likes, comments, and retweets, we forget to live in the moment. We forget how to sit back and cherish everything that’s happening around us. Now is the perfect time to unplug your kids and teach them how to explore and enjoy life beyond the screens.

TVs and tablets are great, but that’s not where memories are made. We want all parents to encourage their children to get up and have fun, so we’ve listed some suggestions to help you teach your kids how to unplug!

 

1. Set Time Limits & Stick to Them.

When it comes to screen time, it’s important to give kids limits. Allow 15-60 minutes of screen time per night, and be sure to enforce this time limit. Encourage them to fill the rest of their evening with activities that don’t include phones, tablets and TVs.

 

2. Encourage Socialization. 

Enroll your children in activities that require them to interact with other children. Not only will this help them develop social skills, but it may introduce them to new interests and passions. Check your local newspaper and library for information about youth sports leagues, academic clubs, theatre classes and more.

 

3. Buy More Books. 

z Before technology took over, people had to rely on their imaginations for entertainment. Crazy, right? Let’s bring that back! Take your kids to a bookstore and encourage them to pick out books that catch their eye. Set aside time each night for reading, and make sure they stick to it.

 

4. Plan Family Fun Nights.

When was the last time you and your family played a board game? Do you ever look through photo albums together? Have you camped out recently? Have you ever thought about having a picnic together? Think of one or two activities a week that don’t involve technology, and do them with the entire family!

 

5. Be a Good Example.

If you want your child to “unplug,” show them how it’s done! Limit your screen time, especially when you’re with the kids. Setting a good example is essential to the process.

It’s never too early or too late to show kids that there’s more to life than what’s on the screens. Start teaching kids how to unplug today!
